Starting My Business as a New Mum Was the Greatest Gift I Could Give Myself

After the birth of my second baby, I found myself in a familiar but overwhelming place. Motherhood is beautiful, challenging, and all-consuming, but somewhere along the way, I started to lose sight of who I was outside of being “mum.”

That’s when I decided to start my business—and looking back, I can honestly say it was the greatest gift I could give myself.

The Pros of Starting a Business as a New Mum

Starting a business gave me so much more than I ever expected:

A Purpose Outside of Mothering

Don’t get me wrong—I love being a mum. But having something to focus on beyond nappies, sleep schedules, and feedings was life-changing. It reminded me that I’m still me.

My Confidence Back

Motherhood has a way of making you question everything about yourself. Starting my business gave me the confidence boost I didn’t know I needed.

Pocket Money

Having a little extra cash to spend (mostly on the baby, of course!) felt empowering. It gave me a sense of independence I hadn’t had for a while.

Adult Interaction

Let’s be real—baby talk has its limits. Connecting with other adults through my work brought a sense of normality back into my life.

The Challenges

That being said, starting a business wasn’t all smooth sailing. Balancing work with motherhood came with its challenges, and not every day felt productive or successful. It’s also important to note that starting a business isn’t the best decision for everyone. Life circumstances, financial situations, and energy levels are different for every family, so it’s important to weigh your options carefully.

Feeling Lost? A Side Hustle Might Be the Answer

If you’re a new mum feeling a bit lost or low on confidence, a side hustle could be just the thing to get you out of that funk. It doesn’t have to be big or intimidating—start small.

Sleep deprivation can have you dreaming up wild ideas, so here’s my advice:

1. Start with a brainstorm. Write down all those ideas buzzing around in your head.

2. Chat with family and friends. Get their feedback and insights—it can help you feel less alone in the process.

3. Take baby steps. Pun intended! You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin.

The Greatest Gift

Starting my business didn’t just help me feel more like myself again—it also reminded me that I’m capable of creating something amazing, even in the middle of sleepless nights and toddler tantrums.

If you’ve been considering starting a side hustle, I encourage you to take the first step. You never know where it might lead.
