I'm Courtney; design daydreamer and chaos coordinator behind The Visual Collective.
My office? Think minimalist chaos with a hint of Baccarat Rouge candle burning (IYKYK) and a Spotify playlist that’s probably reminiscent of a “So Fresh” 2003 CD. If the weather’s right, I’m by the pool, with my laptop trying to get some sunshine.
Early on into this business journey I found out what really lights me up… Other mums turning side hustles into serious business. There’s something about that mix of passion, determination, and a touch of "I have no idea WTF I'm doing" that's just magnetic. Seeing them transform from doubtful dreamers to confident entrepreneurs? That's the business!
I'm a mix of introvert, dreamer, and sarcastic creative – a cocktail that's equal parts reflective and 'let’s make this happen'. When things get tough, I remind myself, “this too shall pass,” and somehow, it always does. I’m a firm believer in tackling problems head-on, mainly because lingering issues are like that one guest who overstays their welcome at a party.
Unwinding? That's easy – I let my kids take the lead. They have this magical ability to turn any day around with their laughs, antics, and absolute refusal to adhere to any form of logic. Not gonna lie this drives me bat shit crazy 50% of the time too.
Now, being in front of the camera? Not my cup of tea. I’m more of a behind-the-scenes, let’s-chat-on-the-phone kind of girl. We'll map out your business journey, encourage you all the way and stay in touch with my new favourite organisational tool - Notion. It’s the client portal of your dreams!
So, to my fellow small business owners, here’s my two cents: Just start. Your first attempt won’t be your last. Plus, evolving is half the fun, trust me – who wants to be a one-trick pony in a world full of unicorns?
My favourite part of the design process? That initial spark of an idea. Sometimes it hits me out of nowhere; other times, it's like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube in the dark. But when it clicks, it’s like magic – a visual kaleidoscope that starts mixing around in my head, ready to be brought to life.
