Local Business Glow Up Series Part 6

Local Business Glow Up: Reimagining a Children’s Brand with Colour, Character and Playful Personality

If this brand feels a little familiar, that might be because you may have seen it when I first started creating these Local Business Glow Ups.

Scallywags was one of those concepts that reminded me how much fun branding can be when you let it have personality. It started as a creative concept, but it has since become part of my pre-made brand collection, meaning this playful children’s brand is now available to purchase and customise for the right business.

For this Local Business Glow Up, I revisited the Scallywags children’s brand and imagined how it could come to life across a playful retail experience. Think kids’ clothing, toys, nursery pieces, giftware, birthday presents and all the little branded details that make a children’s business feel memorable.

This is not paid client work. It is a passion project created to explore how a local children’s brand could feel more colourful, recognisable and full of charm.

The Creative Direction

For Scallywags, the goal was to create a brand that felt playful and childlike, without feeling messy or overly childish.

Children’s branding can be bright and fun, but it still needs to feel considered. Especially when the customer is often a parent, grandparent, aunty, uncle or friend buying something special.

The creative direction was:

Playful and nostalgic
Bright and colourful
Friendly and expressive
Fun for children, appealing to adults
Flexible enough for retail, clothing, packaging and signage

The brand uses bold colour, quirky typography and playful illustration-style elements to create a sense of imagination and fun. It has the kind of personality that could work beautifully across a local toy shop, children’s boutique, nursery store or kids’ clothing label.

The aim was to make it feel cheerful and memorable, while still polished enough to build trust with shoppers.

Creating a Brand That Feels Like an Experience

For a children’s business, the brand should feel like more than just a logo on a sign.

It should create a world.

That might sound dramatic, but it is what makes a children’s brand feel special. The colours, patterns, packaging, signage, stickers, gift cards and little in-store details all work together to create a sense of excitement.

For this concept, the Scallywags brand was applied across:

  • Exterior shop signage

  • Shopping bags

  • Gift vouchers

  • Tissue paper

  • Stickers

  • A shop counter poster

  • Aprons

  • Pattern-based merchandise

  • Website homepage concept

  • Birthday Club graphics

  • Social and retail touchpoints

Each piece was designed to make the brand feel more complete and more memorable.

These are the kinds of details that can make a customer remember where they bought the gift, keep the packaging, photograph the purchase or come back next time they need something special.

Why Branding Matters for Children’s Retail

Children’s businesses have such a strong opportunity to connect emotionally with their audience.

People are not just buying a toy, outfit or gift. They are often buying for a birthday, a new baby, a milestone, a celebration or a little moment of joy.

That means the brand needs to feel warm, trustworthy and exciting.

A strong children’s brand can help a business feel more established, even if it is small. It can make the store feel more giftable, the products feel more thoughtful and the overall experience feel more special.

For Scallywags, the branding was designed to create that sense of joy and recognition. It feels colourful and playful, but still intentional.

Building Recognition Through Repetition

One of my favourite parts of this concept was the use of pattern and repeated brand elements.

For a children’s brand, these details can be so powerful.

A simple icon, character-style mark, pattern or colour combination can become instantly recognisable over time. It can appear on bags, swing tags, tissue paper, stickers, aprons, packaging, posters, social media graphics and website sections.

This kind of repetition helps the business feel consistent without every piece needing to look exactly the same.

It also gives the brand more flexibility. The logo does not have to do all the work. The colours, shapes, patterns and small details become part of the brand world too.

Creating a Retail Brand People Want to Share

Retail businesses, especially gift-based businesses, have so many opportunities to create shareable moments.

A beautiful shopping bag. A cute sticker. A birthday voucher. A fun in-store poster. A branded apron. A wrapped gift that feels exciting before it is even opened.

These details might feel small, but they can completely change how a customer perceives the business.

For Scallywags, I wanted the brand to feel like something people would enjoy interacting with. Something that would stand out in a shopping strip, feel fun to browse online and make the act of buying a children’s gift feel a little more magical.

The Bigger Picture

This glow up is part of my Local Business Glow Up series, where I reimagine local businesses, buildings and business ideas to show what is possible through thoughtful branding, signage, web design and customer experience.

These projects are not about criticising what already exists. They are about exploring potential.

Because sometimes a business has a great product, a great location or a great idea, but the brand does not yet show how special it really is.

Scallywags is a perfect example of how a playful brand can still feel strategic, polished and commercially useful.

This Brand Is Available as a Pre-Made Brand Kit

Unlike some of my other Local Business Glow Up concepts, the Scallywags brand is also available to purchase as a pre-made brand kit.

This means the core brand identity has already been created, including the logo suite, colour palette, font direction and visual style. It is designed for a children’s business that wants a playful, polished and ready-to-use brand without going through a full custom branding process from scratch.

It would be a beautiful fit for a toy shop, children’s boutique, nursery store, kids clothing label, giftware business, play-based business or creative children’s brand.

Because this is a pre-made brand, it can be customised with your business details and then used across your signage, website, packaging, social media, print pieces and customer touchpoints.

If you love the Scallywags direction and can imagine it working for your own business, this brand is available to purchase through my pre-made brand collection.

It needs to help customers understand what you offer, remember your business and feel excited to buy from you.

Through my brand and website packages, we can create a visual identity that works across your logo, packaging, signage, website, social media, print pieces and customer touchpoints.

And if you already have a business but know your brand does not feel as strong as it could, my Collective Clubhouse package is a great place to start. It gives you strategic design support, creative direction and practical help to refine the way your business shows up.

Your brand can be playful and professional.

It can feel fun and still feel intentional.

And for a children’s business, that balance can make all the difference.
