Local Business Glow Up Series Part 4
Reimagining a Coastal Motel with a Modern Nautical Brand Identity
There’s something so nostalgic about an old-school coastal motel. The roadside signage, the balconies, the carpark out front, the holiday makers coming and going, the slightly retro charm of it all. But when a motel starts to feel tired or outdated, it can be hard for potential guests to see the value, even when the location is great.
For this Local Business Glow Up, I reimagined a local motel with a fresh modern nautical brand identity designed to feel coastal, affordable, welcoming and memorable, without making it feel too luxe or disconnected from what it actually is.
The goal was not to turn it into a high-end boutique hotel. The goal was to show how thoughtful branding, signage, interiors, website design and customer touchpoints could completely shift the way a local accommodation business is perceived.
The Creative Direction
For this concept, I wanted to move away from the overly obvious “beachy motel” look and instead create something that felt more considered.
The direction was:
Modern nautical
Clean and coastal
Approachable and affordable
Fresh without feeling fancy
Memorable enough to stand out from generic motel branding
The colour palette was inspired by classic coastal tones, with deep navy, fresh blue, warm white and soft neutral accents. It gives the brand a clean nautical feel, while still feeling calm, practical and easy to roll out across signage, interiors, menus, print pieces and digital design.
The typography and logo system were designed to feel strong, simple and recognisable. The kind of branding that could work just as well on a roadside sign as it could on a key card, coffee cup, booking website or embroidered towel.
Reimagining the Guest Experience
One of the biggest opportunities for motels is that the brand experience does not stop at the logo.
It starts before someone even books.
A potential guest might see the business on Google, click through to the website, browse the rooms, check the location, compare prices and then make a decision based on how much they trust the business.
That means the website, photography, copy, booking flow and overall brand presentation matter just as much as the physical building.
For this glow up, the brand was applied across a full guest experience, including:
A refreshed motel facade
Updated roadside signage
A second-floor dining deck concept
Reception design
Room refreshes
Ensuite bathroom styling
Takeaway coffee cups
Gift vouchers
Welcome cards
Website homepage design
Mobile booking mockup
Branded print collateral
Each touchpoint was designed to make the motel feel more intentional, more current and more guest-friendly.
The Facade Glow Up
The exterior of a motel does so much heavy lifting.
Before someone reads a review, checks the room photos or steps inside, they see the building. If the signage feels dated or the facade feels neglected, it can instantly create doubt.
For the exterior concept, I kept the motel structure recognisable but introduced cleaner signage, stronger branding, coastal colours and small design details that help the building feel more inviting.
The idea was to create a refreshed first impression without making the renovation feel unrealistic or overdone. Sometimes, a strong colour palette, clear signage, updated awnings, better lighting and a few carefully considered materials can make a huge difference.
Adding More Value Through Hospitality Touchpoints
One of my favourite parts of this concept was exploring how the motel could become more than just a place to sleep.
The dining deck concept, coffee cups, welcome cards and gift vouchers all help tell a bigger story. They make the business feel like a destination, not just accommodation.
Even small details like a bedside welcome card or a well-designed key card can make a guest experience feel more thoughtful. These are the kinds of brand moments that people remember, photograph and talk about.
For local tourism and accommodation businesses, that kind of consistency can build trust quickly.
Why Branding Matters for Accommodation Businesses
For motels, holiday rentals, cabins, caravan parks and boutique accommodation, your brand has a direct impact on perceived value.
A dated brand can make a clean and functional space feel less appealing.
A strong brand can make an affordable stay feel polished, reliable and worth booking.
This does not mean every accommodation business needs to become ultra-premium. In fact, one of the biggest mistakes is trying to make a budget-friendly or mid-range business look like something it is not.
The right branding should elevate the business while still feeling aligned with the actual experience.
For this concept, the aim was to keep the motel approachable and practical, while giving it the confidence and consistency it needs to compete online.
The Bigger Picture
This glow up is a passion project, not paid client work. It is part of my Local Business Glow Up series, where I reimagine local businesses and buildings to show what is possible through thoughtful branding, signage, web design and customer experience.
These projects are not about criticising what already exists. They are about showing the potential.
Because sometimes a business does not need to start from scratch. It just needs a clearer identity, a better first impression and a more strategic way to connect with the people it is already trying to reach.
Thinking About Your Own Brand Glow Up?
If your business has outgrown its current branding, website or customer experience, this is exactly the kind of transformation we look at inside my brand and website packages.
Through my branding and website services, we can create a visual identity that feels more aligned, more professional and more memorable, then carry that through your website, signage, packaging, print pieces and customer touchpoints.
And if you are not quite ready for a full rebrand yet, my Collective Clubhouse package is a great place to start. It gives you access to strategic design support, creative direction and practical help to refine the way your business shows up.
Your business might not need to become something completely different.
It might just need to look and feel more like the business it has already become.
