How do you define success?

As a small business owner, you probably find yourself comparing the success of your business to those around you…

But have you ever stopped to consider how beneficial this is for your business?

Think about it...if you’ve just started your business and are launching for the very first time your metrics for success are probably going to look a lot different to the multi-million-dollar company that’s dominating your industry.

Smaller businesses operate in a completely different environment to larger corporations, and have different resources that contribute to their success. For example, big companies have more employees, higher budgets and established brand recognition. These are affordances smaller businesses are yet to reach.

On the other hand, smaller businesses have greater flexibility and can adapt quickly to changes in the market- an incredible advantage over established corporations.

The point here is that comparing your start-up to the businesses you see dominating your Instagram explore feed or lining the walls of shopping centres isn’t really doing you the world of good.

Success is subjective, it depends on each individuals’ values, goals and aspirations. What may be considered success for one biz, is probably not the same for the next. Which is why it’s so important to define what success means to you and your business and work towards that!
