Overcoming creative block?!

You know that feeling when you sit down, ready to smash out some work…and then BAM. Nothing

Hello Creative Block.

In this industry, there’s honestly nothing worse.

I used to feel so overwhelmed & disheartened in moments like this, but over time you come to accept that it’s just a part of this profession

No one is brimming with ideas 24/7 and the more you try to fight it- the worse it gets! (well… for me at least!)

But guess what, having a moment of creative block doesn’t mean you aren't creative & it certainly doesn’t mean that you’re bad at your job!

So, take a breath and remember that it’ll pass.

And in the meantime, here are 4 strategies that I find helpful when I’m feeling a little *uninspired*...

1. Turn off your computer

Trying to push through a creative block rarely works!

Refocus your energy elsewhere- staring at a blank screen isn’t helping anyone, you might as well use this time for something else!

2. Accept it

Let go of the guilt!

You’re only adding extra stress to your already stressed state… This isn’t going to benefit you in the long run.

3. MOVE

Get outside, go for a walk, get some fresh air…move your body!

Trust me, I get it- there’s work to be done, and taking a stroll along the beach doesn’t feel overly productive… but it can be!

Nature is one of my greatest sources of inspiration, take advantage of this time to reset.

4. Prevention is better than cure!

Chances are this isn’t the last time you’re going to experience a creative block…

Which is why it’s always helpful to try and prevent it from happening in the first place rather than searching for a cure.

Here’s what I’ve found to be useful in keeping those mind blocks to a minimum…

Switching up your routine to keep things fresh & exciting.

Staying up to date with industry news to help inspire future projects.

Making notes of ideas as soon as they land in your head. Yes, even in the shower!

Constantly learning from others in the industry & your community, because two minds are always better than one!

I think the important thing to remember is that you’re not alone, I haven’t met one person that hasn’t struggled with creative block at some point in their career!

We’re only human after all!
