What Makes an Unforgettable Logo?

By: The Visual Collective

Firstly, what is a logo?

Put simply, logos are shapes, images & text or a combination of the three that depict the name and purpose of a brand.
But you and I both know that they can & should be so much more than this.

A logo tells the consumer who you are, they visually communicate the unique identity of a brand & what it truly represents. They have the power to evoke an emotional response from your target audience and should leave a lasting impression.

It’s an embodiment of your brand that you’ll use over & over again throughout every aspect of your business. So, not only should it be aligned with your brand’s purpose, it also needs to be unforgettable.

But what makes an unforgettable logo?

I’m going to break this down into 4 key points that not only address the visual design elements to be considered but the concept behind these elements that will separate your logo from the rest.

1.Relevance

Your logo needs to be relevant, not only in the sense of relevance to the consumer, but also relevant to your brand’s identity. The goal is to create unity between your brand’s personality & its visual representation in a way that connects with your target audience.

What does your brand represent & how do you want it to be perceived by your audience?

Is it playful? Is it serious? Or is it sleek and effortless?

Think; Design choices, typography & colour selection.

2. Simplicity

Simple logos are easily remembered & recognised. Simple doesn’t mean abandoning your brand’s character and unique elements, rather ensuring that even from a glance, consumers are able to recognise your logo with ease.

To be unforgettable, your logo needs to be easily distinguished from others, and communicate the value of your brand effortlessly. This is easier said than done, first you need to have a clear understanding of what you're trying to communicate to your audience, and what elements of your brand will tell this story best.

Think; Simple yet significant.

3. Scalability

Think about where you’ll use your logo. Will it be plastered across billboards? Used as signage? On clothing? On your website?

Scalability ensures that your logo is legible across numerous platforms… You want your design to be easily interpreted no matter the size.

Think; Instagram post vs website landing page.

4. Timelessness

Your logo may evolve over the years, but ideally, you don’t want to reinvent the entire brand over & over again…

So, you want to avoid current trends, don’t base your design choices off what’s ‘in’ right now. Because chances are this trend won't be relevant for very long, and you’ll be left with a logo that’s outdated before it’s even made an impression.

Opt for a design that aligns with your brand’s core values. This is what consumers will relate to, and will remain relevant to not only you but your target audience for years to come.

Think; Dependable, stylish & ALWAYS in season.

Businesses are created for a purpose, you’ve seen a gap in the market and provided consumers with a solution. You know what you're offering and who it’s for, now you just have to communicate this through your branding.

When designing your logo, keep this in mind. Don’t be afraid to break the mould. Your individuality is your greatest asset, this is what will make your brand memorable.
